12: Audience feedback

Audience Feedback

Hannah Constantine - Aged 19
Question
Answer
Out of 10, how well would you rate my production?
8
And why do you rate this (what they have rated)?
I enjoyed watching the music video. It looked professional and kept me interested all the way through.
Do you feel I have met a target audience of 18-24 year olds?
I liked it, so I would imagine so.
What was your favourite aspects of my music video?
I loved the cloud time lapse you included and the editing was very accurate throughout and kept to the theme.
Finally, are there any improvements?
Perhaps next time you could include a music channel logo or include the artists name at the beginning to brand the artist more.
Out of 10, how well would you rate my poster and CD digi-pack?
8
And why do you rate this (what they have rated)?
The design was really well put together. I also thought the editing was just the right amount.
Do you feel the poster and CD cover compliment the music video well?
I do, I liked that the poster was screenshot from the actual music video as it created more synergy between the two.
What part of the ancillary texts do you like most?
I love the powerful CD cover, as the artist is clearly branded. The colour schemes are kept throughout the ancillary texts as well which links all the products together.
Finally, are there any improvements?
Maybe next time you could include the price on the poster so audiences know how much the album will be roughly.
Samantha Bowles - 18 years old

Question
Answer
Out of 10, how well would you rate my production?
9
And why do you rate this (what they have rated)?
I loved the whole concept of the narrative and the performance aspects. I felt sympathy for the two characters involved so the music video created an audience reaction.
Do you feel I have met a target audience of 18-24 year olds?
It does as we can relate to the narrative since the target audience age is the age for first loves and mature relationships.
What was your favourite aspects of my music video?
The part where the boy walks away from the camera and the camera loses focus is a very analytical way depending on how the audience see's this, raising social talk meaning the video was successful.
Finally, are there any improvements?
Maybe include a brief introduction just like the original one to give the characters more context.
Out of 10, how well would you rate my poster and CD digi-pack?
8
And why do you rate this (what they have rated)?
The design was really stylistic. It looked professionally made and it stood out like it should in order to be successful.
Do you feel the poster and CD cover compliment the music video well?
I did since they kept the same sort of theme throughout all products.
What part of the ancillary texts do you like most?
The flare added to the poster gave the impression the music video would be a soul, indie ballad which is exactly what it was.
Finally, are there any improvements?
Maybe adding the price to the poster will inform the audience of a rough guide of cost, and would increase sales.

7: Role Allocation: Individual

Role Allocation

Role allocation refers to the tasks a person has during a film production. As I decided to complete the project on my own, I cannot give out certain tasks to a group, whoever I become more of an Auteur. An Auteur refers to the 'author of a film'. This means the director is seen a huge influence in the creative force of the motion picture. The theory derives from France in the 1950's.

As I have worked on my own, all my ideas and concepts have came from myself. I have adopted the roles of being in the music video as the main artist, audio and visual representative and the editor to both production and ancillary texts. I also had to do most of the camera work myself and also did all the research on my own. I also decided to work on my own as many successful productions have came out of Auteur's.

The only other two roles I had within my production were my supporting actor in the music video itself and my audience to receive feedback off, and to improve from there.

With working alone, there are many pro's and con's;

Pro's

  • With not having to manage a group of young adults, which was ideal for my music video and skill level, I was able to be flexible around my life only. This meant for more efficient use of time and a reduce of risk when absences may occur.
  • All the work I have done is my own work. This not only gives me a sense of pride, however means that all the workload was fair as I completed all the work myself. Instead of distributing tasks which may be more work than others, this allowed for no unfair distribution.
  • When working in a group, conflict can arise quickly when pitching ideas. When working alone, there was no one to dislike my ideas, or abandon my input so my work was my own ideas.
  • Less organisation was needed in the aspect of gathering everyone to film, or asking members of the group when their tasks would be complete and etc. This means I saved time to film and complete tasks rather than liaise with a group which would take up a lot of time.

Con's

  • As I worked on my own, I had no one I could discuss my ideas with and no one to reflect on different views with what I wanted to accomplish as a team. This meant I only had the ideas I could accumulate and couldn't expand further than my own imagination.
  • When creating a production, the work load is quite high. By not distributing tasks and projects, the workload created more pressure on myself to get the task completed. This may hold me back from my full potential as I would have to limit my time on each task.
  • The skills I have myself are the only skills I can use. Whereas in a group, some members may have higher skills in tasks than me, and I might excel in something else, bringing a higher standard of working and contribution to the group. However, I can only complete the tasks to a certain standard to what my skill level allows.
  • By working alone, there is a lot of work that requires pristine organisation. By not being organised, the result may be overdue coursework, lack of professionalism and lack of creativity due to not being organised.
  • Multitasking would be the only choice, as I have no one else to distribute tasks onto. This means I will have to focus on several tasks at hand instead of focusing completely on the one task that has been given to me. This means my full attention won't be devoted to a task at any one time.
  • If I see flaws within my project, plan or research, I will have less of a time scale to change my mind as I will be on a tight time schedule due to having no one else to rely on in my group to help with changes. This could mean I will not have time to make amends when I come across these issues.

6: Storyboards

Storyboard

My storyboard will help me plan the shots I need to use in my music video. I finally decided to base my music video on 'Hello' by Adele. My music video will base the artist, and she will be included in the plot, being the girlfriend in this love story. The plot will follow the tensions and break up of a besotted couple.

Number one

In this shot, I will be shown in a long shot, showing bedroom and the artist head to toe. The mise-en-scene here will be the bedroom, as this represents intimacy in a relationship. I want the prop of hand written love letters to be in the shot, so the audience can see I am dwelling over the love letters, which are symbols of romantic love. I would like this shot to be seen in the introduction. The lighting used here will be mid-key lighting to give the impression of a neutral feeling. A simple cut transition will be used after and before this clip.

Number Two
This will be the structure of my performance pieces, singing in the woods just like in the original music video. This will feature a lot of medium long shots, close up shots and pans, again resembling the original music video. A sepia filter will also be applied to this, to also use stylistic elements from the original music video. I will not use diegetic sound but add non-diegetic sound of the artist singing over the top of the clip. This will need to be synced and edited efficiently to make the clip seamless. Natural lighting from filming outside will be used, but I will edit to make this look brighter, to make the artist glow. Normal transitions between shots will be used before and after also.

Number Three

In this shot, the partner walks away from the girlfriend and leaves down a path which will fade to a blur when the subject is enough distance away. This will be shown in a long shot to an extreme long shot with cutaways of other shots around this one. This adds dramatic effect and emphasises the break up the couple are going through. This will feature near the end of the music video to display the couple are no longer together, in a montage of the couple breaking up. Again with filming outside, natural light will be used. A cross fade would look stylistic here, between the montage cuts.

4: Audience Research

Audience Research

In order for me to have a target audience, I will have to find out first what audiences like. A way to this would be to conduct a questionnaire which I can give to the target audience age, which would be people with their own personal interest and opinions. My target audience age was researched on a website called YouGov Profiles LITE, which I input the artists I researched, which was Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, Hayley Williams and Lady GaGa. All my evidence shown that fans were mostly aged 18-24 years, male, from a middle to higher class social grade and those that work in artistic jobs, fashion jobs and public service jobs. Working from this I asked 4 people of my target age for these artists 5 questions and recorded their responses below:

1. How many music videos do you watch in a week? None, two or less, two to 5, more than 5?

A: (Aged 18) - "About 2 or less, only when I get told about one or see a new one on Facebook or YouTube".
B: (Aged 19) - "Two to five, I see the ones shared on social media and when my friends tell me to watch one. Also being a media student I have to watch some..."
C: (Aged 20) - "None, I just listen to music, I only watch the video if I listen on YouTube and it is automatically there. Other than that, I don't see the point."
D: (Aged 23) - "Two to five, I think."

2. Where do you see music videos the most?

A: (Aged 18) - "YouTube, I search for music or when someone tells me a music video is funny sad so I watch them on there."
B: (Aged 19) - "YouTube, I sometimes see them on Facebook and stuff, but only when people share them."
C: (Aged 20) - "I YouTube them, only when I need to listen to the music though or when I already know it is a good music video anyway."
D: (Aged 23) - "TV mostly, when I'm bored I put on Heart or MTV, then I only watch the ones I'm interested in".

3. What type of music video is your favourite, performance ones, abstract ones, or narrative ones, and why?

A: (Aged 18) - "I enjoy ones with a story behind it, as it really captures the audience as they can relate to the music video more."
B: (Aged 19) - "I like abstract, as they can be quite interesting. I like narrative too though, maybe both."
C: (Aged 20) - "Narrative, I'm not sure as to why but I know performance would also be good with a narrative as it includes the artists and you can see them actually sing the song."
D: (Aged 23) - "Performance is good because you see the artist and I know what music is playing then because I know the singer."

4. What genre of music makes the best music videos?

A: (Aged 18) - "I think technopop songs, or club music make the best music videos, they're really lively and dance-y, and makes me want to sing along and stuff."
B: (Aged 19) - "I like sad song music videos because they are really hard hitting, and when done right can really shift me sometimes. I think songs that are relatable to me affect me most so maybe, soul or something like that?"
C: (Aged 20) - "Rock music, definitely. They have such meaningful plots behind them, and when you see them on stage it gets you pumped and wants to make you listen to more music!"
D: (Ages 23) - "Pop songs, they're lively and upbeat and make you feel happier. The music videos show this like, by how they show like, dance montages and peppy singers."

5. Finally, can you tell me your favourite music video and artist, off the top of your head?

A: (Aged 18) - "I can't think of one, maybe Bohemian Rhapsody!"
B: (Aged 19) - "I like Lady Gaga's 'Till It Happens to You', it's hard hitting and really emotional, one of the best ones I've seen in ages to be fair."
C: (Aged 20) - "It's between Lily Allen's 'URL Badman' or 'M.A.D' by Hadouken.
D: (Aged 23) - "I love BeyoncĂ©'s 'If I were a Boy'"

2.2: Research into existing CD promotionals

Taylor Swift - Bad Blood

The album Bad Blood was released the 17th of May 2015, to the public. The song 'Bad Blood' features a music video in the style of an action movie which took the world by storm and became viral. The song is about a friend that betrayed Taylor which inspired her to write the song. Many celebrities star in this music video, such as Cara Delevigne, Selena Gomez and Ellie Goulding which may be the reason for the successful sales.

The promotional posters seen on billboards, magazines and online articles also became a hit with the fans as each poster features either one of the celebrities starred in the music video. In this analysis of existing CD promotionals, I will be using the poster with the main artist Taylor Swift.

The poster uses a black background which depicts mystery and an the topic of death or villians within the album. The theme of death is also shown through the blood splatters that have been included in the corners of the poster to add style and also suggests what the album might be about.

The poster is presented like a movie poster, which creates synergy between the music video and the promotions. In the two top corners of the poster, the text in white bold capitals made to stand out against the background which reads "directed by" and "produced by". This is rarely used to promote music videos but since this album is obscure compared to the rest she has released, this creates an impact on the fans and audiences since this is different to what they are used to. This makes people more interested in the album.

In the central of the poster, which is in black and white with low key lighting, is Taylor Swift, creating the audiences focus on her. Compared to the rest of her albums which feature a blonde hair, red lipped innocent role model, this has been replaced by a mysterious, villain looking strong female which is almost unrecognisable as Taylor Swift. This artistic branding is different to previous albums which may indicate a change in Taylor's career path, becoming a different type of artist and person. The slick short hair covers her left eye, instead of her golden curly locks which she usually wears looks menacing. The make up she wears is no longer natural looking with red lips but more smokey eyed and dangerous looking, with a mixture of dark colours and defined cheeks. This changes her structure of her pure looking presentation, and shocks audeinces by this dramatic change taking place. The outfit she wears also would shock audiences as she wears a leather jacket. Taylor Swift has always been known for her floral print dresses and white colour scheme clothes to show off her innocent nature. The leather jacket represents danger and action which is also seen in the music video.

The title is blood red, angled across Swifts torso. The font is extremely bold and has slices missing to make the poster look more professional and stylistic. The font is typically used on action movies which are typically bold, large and very stylistic. There is a quote from the song "band aids don't fix bullet holes".This too stands out with the white font and capitilisation. Again, this matches the movie type theme as many movie posters might feature movie quotes to interest their fans.

The below text indicates a "world premier" which would only again feature on movie posters rather than music videos. The release date is featured next to this. This has been released in summer due to summer anthems become more successful due to more air time rather than around Christmas and other events which usually happen in winter. People are more likely to listen to music in the summer due to the better hotter weather so more people socialise.

Billboard, the company brought by Prometheus Global Media issues advertisements and provides space for advertising. The other company seen is ABC (American Broadcasting Company), which is owned by Disney. This may suggest why celebrities such as Selena Gomez and Zendaya Coleman appear in the music video since they used to be sponsored by Disney. ABC also promotes certain media also.

In the bottom left corner in small text is "TaylorSwiftInstagram" which is where her fans can follow her progress. This is a form of social networking synergy and suggests a long tail on the product to keep fans interested.

Lana Del Rey - Ultraviolence

The album 'Ultraviolence' is promoted on the poster as seen above. The album Ultraviolence was released June 13th, 2014. This again, is released in the summer time as the songs could be successful summer anthems. The album is of a psychedelic rock genre. This style of promotion is successful and appealing to audience due to many different elements.

The background features a black and white scenic view of the ocean waves lapping against the shore. This could portray the dream pop genre that Lana sings in the style of, as the background is very aesthetic. The use of the waves can symbolise many things and is left to audience interpretation. Many people would say the ocean waves are calming and pleasant, whereas some would say the ocean is vast and dangerous. These interpretations could link with the songs within the album, as Lana's songs are very personal and are analysed in many different ways depending on the audiences relatable situations, opinions and thoughts. The edges have been feathered with a vignette filter, fading to black. This has been used to create a mysterious, depressing affect and might also suggest the albums overall mood and focus.

The title is used in the central top of the poster, in bold capital letters in a bleak blue and bright white font. The title is in the middle of the poster as this catches the audiences eye first as the poster follows the typical structure. The blue used is a dull colour, however when used on the black and white font, it stands out a lot more, making it appear brighter. This has been used to create an unusual colour contrast and would catch the audiences eyes more with this colour scheme.

The CD album cover features on the left side of the poster, taking quite a portion of the space. This has been shown as the audience will remember the style of the album cover, and when released, they will automatically know which album and who's the albums is. Not much text has been used as this will deflect audiences attention. Pictures make more of an impact on consumers as the style of an album cover is more memorable than the name in most cases. The album cover chosen features Lana herself with the album name across the bottom of the CD cover. This is repeated in attempt for the audience to remember the name of the album but more so the link between the title and what the artist looks like. The poster matches the colour scheme of the CD album as this too is in black and white.

To the side of th album cover, in quite small font is the track list. The colour scheme of the blue and white is seen here again. This poster may have included a track list so that the viewers can see not only what songs are on the album, but so the fans can look for their favourite songs as singles are released before albums, which might drive sales if they like what is on the album.

This poster features online due to the two hyperlinks that are on the poster. The poster has been put online and made interactive to appeal to more viewers and increase sales as the viewers become immersed in the poster and can search for more information about the artist and pre-order the album. These links are again in blue and the other in yellow. The pre-order stands out more than the rest of the text as the company promotion the album want to drive sales and divert the audiences attention to making a purchase. The release date is also noticeable in white font, as this is the most important information, letting the audience know when they can buy the album.

Finally, in the bottom right corner, there is the iTunes logo, 'Download on the app store'. As we live in an information age, this is very vague language but however, many people would understand where to buy it from. The apple logo is also on this, showing that the album is featured on Apple iPhones and iPods. Judging by the style and refernces to the App Store, I think this poster might be published on the homepage of iTunes in order to make sales increase. The poster also doesn't state where you can purchase the hard copy of the album but again, the target audience for this artist would possibly be ages 18-29 due to the genre, content and topics explored in Lana's songs.
